{"id":949,"date":"2013-10-18T15:36:58","date_gmt":"2013-10-18T10:06:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/?p=949"},"modified":"2020-07-21T17:22:23","modified_gmt":"2020-07-21T11:52:23","slug":"open-letter-to-my-epayment-gateway-company","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/2013\/10\/18\/open-letter-to-my-epayment-gateway-company\/","title":{"rendered":"Open Letter To My ePayment Gateway Company"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The proverbial ink has hardly dried on my blog post titled <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/13\/mobile-otp-cyanide-or-caffeine-for-online-payments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mobile OTP: Cyanide Or Caffeine For Online Payments?<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>than I saw the following &#8220;payment failure&#8221; screen on my laptop:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/fp-fi.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-950 \" title=\"fp-fi\" src=\"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/fp-fi-300x133.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"133\" data-wp-editing=\"1\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/fp-fi-300x133.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/fp-fi.jpg 630w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This &#8216;kiss-of-death&#8217; message appeared when I tried to pay for my broadband connection. Incidentally, it was the very first online bill payment I attempted after the Mobile OTP security feature was launched.<\/p>\n<p>This screen gave many likely reasons to explain why my payment failed. None of them is right.<\/p>\n<p>Let me rebut each one of them via this open letter addressed to the ePayment Gateway company that displayed this screen:<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n<p>Dear ePG Company:<\/p>\n<p><strong>You<\/strong>: You have used the Back \/ Forward \/ Refresh button on your Browser.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Me<\/strong>: In general, whenever I sit in front of my computer, I get into a mad frenzy and keep clicking all buttons that I see on the screen. But, I didn&#8217;t do that on this occasion. I promise. Check your website clickstream data and you&#8217;ll know that I&#8217;m not lying.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You<\/strong>: Your cookies may be disabled.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Me<\/strong>: I don&#8217;t recall you asking for my permission to place cookies on my PC in the first place. In any case, I just successfully made another payment from the same laptop, so this can&#8217;t have anything to do with cookies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You<\/strong>: Your session has been <em>(sic)<\/em> expired.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Me<\/strong>: Not by me, for sure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You<\/strong>: You may be using same browser for different transactions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Me<\/strong>: Duh! I don&#8217;t even know how to do that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You<\/strong>: Your transaction has been timed out due to inactive <em>(sic)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Me<\/strong>: Given my oft-expressed anxiety about failed payments, I&#8217;m extremely alert when I attempt online payments. So, if anyone was goofing off at their post, it wasn&#8217;t me.<\/p>\n<p>Wish I could give you more details but I need to go to the TELCO&#8217;s office, stand in a long line and pay the bill before my broadband connection gets disconnected. So, you&#8217;ll need to excuse my brevity. In return, I&#8217;ll forget that you still owe me an explanation for failing to process my payment.<\/p>\n<p>Sincerely yours,<\/p>\n<p>Back-to-Cash Customer<\/p>\n<p>PS: I notice that every one of your reasons begins with &#8220;you&#8221; or &#8220;your&#8221;. So much for your faith in your customers. I&#8217;ve known some narcissistic banks in my day (sorry ICICI, that old joke had to come out some day) but you&#8217;re easily the most cocksure financial institution I&#8217;ve come across. Hope some of that chutzpah rubs off on your website and keeps it up and running at all times.<\/p>\n<p>PPS: If you can&#8217;t increase your website&#8217;s uptime, can you at least clean up the language on it?
