I\u2019ve been asked only once, by someone on Twitter.<\/p>\n<div style=\"background-color: #fafafa;\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 10px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/droskill\/status\/1494650434019074053\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@droskill: The Rakuten coin was launched in 2018 &#8211; but I can (can&#8217;t?) find a single mention of it after the intro. Any idea what happened to it? Does it still exist?<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>(Fans of Joseph Heller might find a striking resemblance between the above paragraphs and the opening paragraphs of <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.in\/books?id=SjjELqnlrrMC&amp;pg=PA11&amp;lpg=PA11&amp;dq=I%27ve+been+asked+several+times+to+write+about+the+Jewish+experience+in+America&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=PVy3eBbSrO&amp;sig=arqi95VestcuZQFafsrM0G8IJY0&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjWz4aNmLLYAhXFs48KHag6CKIQ6AEIJjAA#v=onepage&amp;q=I've%20been%20asked%20several%20times%20to%20write%20about%20the%20Jewish%20experience%20in%20America&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Good As Gold<\/a>, one of my all time favorite novels. I apologize in advance to the Estate of Heller for taking the liberty of paraphrasing what\u2019s one of the most captivating novel starts that I\u2019ve ever read.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I did some quick-and-dirty research on Rakuten Coin and this is what I found:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There&#8217;s no mention of Rakuten Coin anywhere on Google, at least not in any English language websites. I didn&#8217;t check the Japanese language entries on the SERP.<\/li>\n<li>I found several mentions of Rakuten Pay, Rakuten Points, Rakuten Cash, and Rakuten Point Card. Cf. <em>Coindesk<\/em> article entitled\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/business\/2021\/03\/01\/e-commerce-giant-rakuten-now-lets-users-shop-with-cryptocurrency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>E-Commerce Giant Rakuten Now Lets Users Shop With Cryptocurrency<\/strong><\/a> and <em>Rakuten.Today<\/em> blog post entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/rakuten.today\/blog\/rakuten-points-more-than-a-loyalty-program.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Rakuten Points: Much more than just a loyalty program<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>According to the <em>Rakuten.Today<\/em> blog post: &#8220;Since 2017, crypto asset management service Rakuten Wallet has allowed users to buy and sell cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, conveniently exchanging them to and from Japanese yen. But yen isn\u2019t your only ticket to ride the cryptocurrency train: <em><strong>Rakuten Wallet users can also use their Rakuten Points to top up their portfolio<\/strong><\/em>. The service sweetened the deal even further, introducing a new way for users to <em><strong>convert their assets back into a spendable currency. For no cost, users can now turn their Bitcoin and Ethereum into Rakuten Cash<\/strong><\/em> \u2014 tied to the Japanese yen and functionally similar to Rakuten Points&#8221; (emphasis mine.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/rakutencoin-fi.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9706 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/rakutencoin-fi.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/rakutencoin-fi.jpg 630w, https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/rakutencoin-fi-200x89.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From the above, it would appear that Rakuten did not go forward with its original plan of minting alt-coin (Rakuten Coin) from its loyalty points (Rakuten Points).<\/p>\n<p>That said, by permitting consumers to convert Rakuten Points to cryptocurrencies and convert those cryptocurrencies back to Rakuten Cash, the Japanese conglomerate has achieved &#8220;Buoyancy&#8221; and &#8220;Unlimited Liquidity&#8221;, the two defining attributes \/ key benefits of a blockchain loyalty program that I&#8217;d described in my original post. Any company willing to reward their users with a token can benefit for this service, as transactions are 100% transparent and secure. Coupons, paper or membership cards are no longer required.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>and<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/s_ketharaman\/status\/1355142154633572354\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Bakkt<\/strong><\/a>: Starting out as a cryptoexchange, <em>Bakkt<\/em> pivoted into a blockchain loyalty platform \/ wallet app that unlocks one trillion dollars of digital assets.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width: 70%;\" \/>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s a slew of startups and enterprises that have launched crypto rewards programs. While it&#8217;s too early to say whether they will grow into fully fledged blockchain loyalty programs, let me give a sneak preview of some of them below:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jaguar<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/iota-partners-with-jaguar-land-rover-on-crypto-rewards-program-price-jumps-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jaguar Land Rover announced<\/a> rewards for motorists in its cryptocurrency IOTAcoin for sharing road data such as congestion, potholes, lane closures, and so on. <strong><em>Waze<\/em><\/strong>, the Israeli mapping company that was acquired by Google for one billion dollars, also crowdsources collection of such data but, as far as I know, it does not reward drivers using its app for such data &#8211; in crypto or fiat.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">ShopIn already pays SHOPcoin for shopping data. Which will be first fintech to take up my offer to pay OBCoin for banking data? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ePLp9HQRSe\">https:\/\/t.co\/ePLp9HQRSe<\/a>  <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/OpenBanking?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#OpenBanking<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Crypto?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Crypto<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/NQIEWvYfyM\">pic.twitter.com\/NQIEWvYfyM<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; GTM360 (@GTM360) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GTM360\/status\/1129001132787998720?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 16, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><strong>J P Morgan Chase<\/strong>: In its article entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finextra.com\/newsarticle\/36670\/jpmorgan-to-turn-loyalty-points-into-tradeable-assets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JPMorgan to turn loyalty points into tradeable assets<\/a>, <em>Finextra<\/em> reports that America&#8217;s largest bank has partnered with fintech startup <em>Affinity Capital Exchange<\/em> to create a new class of financial assets based on the trading of loyalty point portfolios.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/s_ketharaman\/status\/1032346877004599298\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Lolli<\/strong><\/a>: This startup runs a bitcoin-based loyalty program that rewards consumers with the world&#8217;s #1 cryptocurrency for shopping at 1000+ stores.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/lolli01.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9710\" src=\"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/lolli01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"499\" height=\"129\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/lolli01.jpg 1106w, https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/lolli01-200x52.jpg 200w, https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/lolli01-1024x265.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/lolli01-768x199.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 499px) 100vw, 499px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Navigate<\/strong>: Per <em>The Block<\/em> article titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblockcrypto.com\/post\/150448\/navigate-raises-seed-funding-crypto-alan-howard-polygon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alan Howard invests in Polygon-based web3 data startup Navigate<\/a>, Web3 startup Navigate lets &#8220;its users share (sensor) data and earn crypto rewards in its native NVG8 token&#8221;. Data includes &#8220;data points captured by Internet of Things (IoT) devices tracking air pollution, carbon emissions, water pressure, noise levels, utility efficiency, airspace activity, and network signal strength&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/permission.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Permission<\/strong><\/a>: This company rewards users in its cryptocurrency ASK for shopping data. Hope it does better than <strong><em>ShopIn<\/em><\/strong>, a Web3 startup that attempted the same business model a couple of years ago but shutdown when its founder got embroiled in a fraud.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tyb.xyz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>TYB<\/strong><\/a>: <em>Try Your Best<\/em> issues loyalty reward points in AVAX cryptocurrency. Built on the <em>Avalanche<\/em> blockchain, TYB helps brands to wean away from excessive dependency on pricey ads on Facebook, Instagram, Snap, and other third-party social media platforms. But, from what I could glean from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finextra.com\/newsarticle\/40086\/shawbrook-offers-lending-discount-for-consumers-sharing-open-banking-data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Finextra<\/em> article<\/a> about this announcement, both the loan and the discount are in fiat, not crypto. If readers are aware of any bank or fintech that offers crypto rewards for banking data, please share in the comments below.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width: 70%;\" \/>\n<p>While blockchain loyalty programs and crypto rewards schemes have not yet gone mainstream, they have certainly gained serious traction in the last year or two.<\/p>\n<p>So, sizzling is the right answer!<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE DATED 15 SEPTEMBER 2022:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s the Mother of All Blockchain Loyalty programs: <strong><em>Starbucks Odyssey<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The highlights of the new program announced by the world&#8217;s largest coffee retailer are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rewards via NFT aka <em>Journey Stamp<\/em><\/li>\n<li>NFT can be earned and bought (via debit \/ credit card) (See\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/2015\/03\/27\/loyalty-gifts-buy-or-earn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"bookmark noopener\">Loyalty Gifts \u2013 Buy Or Earn?<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Gift in the form of product (e.g. free coffee) and experience (trip to Costa Rica coffee farm)<\/li>\n<li>Based on Polygon blockchain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/09\/12\/starbucks-unveils-its-blockchain-based-loyalty-platform-and-nft-community-starbucks-odyssey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>TechCrunch<\/em><\/a>, Starbucks has gone out of the way to obfuscate the complications of crypto in its iconic loyalty program.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: xx-small;\">DISCLAIMER: The Blockchain world has an eclectic mix of elements like cryptocoin, ICO, and so on whose legal status is ambiguous and swings wildly between various states of the spectrum such as illegal, maybe-illegal, not-illegal and legal and from one country to another.
