For the uninitiated, the term refers to members of the top one percent of a population by wealth i.e. the ultra-rich. It&#8217;s also another expression for 99th percentile.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width: 70%;\" \/>\n<p>I read the following tweet recently:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">When rickshawwalas do it, it\u2019s daylight robbery! <\/p>\n<p>When Uber does it, it\u2019s \u201cSurge pricing\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/DoubleStandards?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#DoubleStandards<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gniB26zjmL\">https:\/\/t.co\/gniB26zjmL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Gautam Govitrikar DMD (@Gautaamm) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Gautaamm\/status\/1247517606161952771?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 7, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Struck me that the only ostensible difference between the <em>Rickshaw Wala<\/em> and Uber is <em>jargon<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>When the auto guy barks &#8220;1500 Rupees&#8221;, you feel outraged. But when Uber says\u00a0&#8220;Surge Pricing&#8221;, it conjures up thoughts of free market forces, demand-supply, and all those nice things you studied in college and forgot about thereafter.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Lot\u2019s In A Name: &quot;Black marketing&quot; is illegal but give it a cool name like &quot;surge pricing&quot; &amp; people may actually boast about paying it!<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Ketharaman Swaminathan (@s_ketharaman) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/s_ketharaman\/status\/626037234647609345?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 28, 2015<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>I know it&#8217;s not very fair to the <em>Rickshaw Wala<\/em> but such is life.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s not only Uber. There are many other contexts in which jargon is used to legitimize otherwise questionable practices:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When a tout does it, it&#8217;s <em>Blackmarketing<\/em>. But when StubHub does it, it&#8217;s <em>Premium Pricing<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>When a business house gives money to a politician, it&#8217;s Corruption. But when the same money is paid into the politician&#8217;s SuperPAC, it&#8217;s <em>Campaign Contribution<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>When a Nigerian Prince does it, it&#8217;s <em>Phishing<\/em>.
