{"id":13395,"date":"2025-07-09T10:00:07","date_gmt":"2025-07-09T04:30:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/?p=13395"},"modified":"2025-07-09T20:56:48","modified_gmt":"2025-07-09T15:26:48","slug":"how-ai-can-propel-personalization-to-a-higher-orbit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/2025\/07\/09\/how-ai-can-propel-personalization-to-a-higher-orbit\/","title":{"rendered":"How AI Can Propel Personalization To A Higher Orbit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the hottest use cases of AI in Marketing is <strong>Personalization<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The dictionary meaning of personalization is as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Personalization<\/em>: The action of designing or producing something to meet someone&#8217;s individual requirements e.g. the goal of search personalization is to help the searcher save time.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the context of marketing, I&#8217;ll slightly rephrase this to<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Personalization:<\/em> doing something that resonates with the customer&#8217;s specific attributes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>where<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;doing something&#8221; is creating TOFU marketing communications such as direct mail, email flyer, targeted offer \/ next best offer, social media post, website landing page. (for the uninitiated, TOFU = Top of Funnel)<\/li>\n<li>Customer can be company as well as employee<\/li>\n<li>Attribute includes name, firmographics, demographics, psychographics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Personalization is almost as old as Artificial Intelligence although both fields received a big boost since the advent of <em>Generative AI<\/em> in the end of 2022 (when OpenAI launched ChatGPT).<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width: 70%;\" \/>\n<p>In the late 1980s, before <em>Microsoft Word<\/em> was a glint in Bill Gates&#8217;s eye, we personalized customer correspondence by using the <em>mail merge<\/em> feature in <em>WordStar<\/em> e.g.<br \/>\n<!--BLOCKQUOTE, NO LHS LINE, GREEN--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/ai-personalization-fi-2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13398 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/ai-personalization-fi-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/ai-personalization-fi-2.jpg 630w, https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/ai-personalization-fi-2-500x180.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(For the uninitiated, WordStar, along with WordPerfect, were the two most popular wordprocessing software packages before Word dislodged them from the top of the totem pole.)<\/p>\n<p>As you can see, the body of the letter was the same but each letter was individually addressed by the customer&#8217;s name.<\/p>\n<p>While the WordStar mail merge feature was powerful enough to personalize other elements of the letter, it was quite painful to use, so most people stopped at personalizing the name of the recipient.<\/p>\n<p>In the next generation of personalization, with Microsoft Word, we personalized other elements of the letter &#8211; or email, which had already become mainstream by then &#8211; by using &#8220;business logic&#8221;.\u00a0For example:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>We personalized our monthly email newsletter to include a Diwali Greeting to some recipients and leave that line blank for other recipients. See <a href=\"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/2014\/01\/24\/how-a-small-problem-in-mail-merge-led-to-a-big-lesson-in-content-marketing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>How A Small Problem In Mail Merge Led To A Big Lesson In Content Marketing<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0for more details.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/m03.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1313 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/m03.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/m03.jpg 500w, https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/m03-300x78.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>We ran a campaign where the first paragraph was personalized to founders who graduated from IIT Bombay.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/iitb-personalization-2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13399 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/iitb-personalization-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"163\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of our customers has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gtm360.com\/customers\/#c127\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Customer Engagement Management<\/em><\/a> software, which lets brands make targeted offers based on firmographics, demographics, psychographics, and purchase history. It helps personalization to scale new heights.<\/p>\n<p>On a side note, while personalization has made major strides in the last 40 years, J6P (Joe \/ Jane Six Pack aka Common Man \/ Woman) still thinks of it as just addressing recipients by name. This is one of those software feature adoption behaviors that has not changed in the four decades that I&#8217;ve been in this industry. More on that in a bit.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"width: 70%;\" \/>\n<p>Personalization in the above examples is indexed on <em>business rules<\/em> e.g.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li>If recipient is Hindu or Indian, include Diwali Greeting line, else leave the line blank.<\/li>\n<li>If recipient is an alumnus of IIT Bombay, include line about me, else leave the line blank.<\/li>\n<li>If recipient has a hotel-related spend on their credit card statement, send them a targeted offer for AirBnB, else do nothing.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>These rules are decided by the marketer and configured on the tech stack used for creating and delivering the comms.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the marketer supplied the following data to the software:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li>Recipient is Hindu<\/li>\n<li>Recipient is IITB alum<\/li>\n<li>Recipient had a hotel-related spend on their credit card statement.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em><strong>Enter AI.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Artificial Intelligence \/ Machine Learning (henceforth AI for the sake of simplicity) can:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li>Find the data. By using its pretrained data and by accessing third party data brokers, AI will find out whether e.g. recipient is an alum of IIT Bombay.<\/li>\n<li>Generate personalized text and imagery for the communication in the style of the individual customer&#8217;s tastes and preferences.<\/li>\n<li>Measure conversion rates of each wave of the targeted offer campaign and recommend ways to improve the effectiveness of the next wave of the campaign by e.g. tweaking the content, changing the image, altering the color of CTA, sending the communication on a different day and \/ or different time, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In this manner, AI can propel personalization to a higher orbit.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Whereas technology in the past was more based on static logic, true AI adapts dynamically, learning from behavioral signals, context and intent. It\u2019s about moving beyond static \u201cif-then\u201d logic to something truly intelligent &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/martech.org\/how-to-tell-if-its-real-ai-or-just-automation-at-a-higher-price\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Martech<\/em><\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I don\u2019t get why people are upset about ads in AI.<\/p>\n<p>IMO targeted ads are great!<\/p>\n<p>Ads help businesses find customers &amp; help users discover things they actually want; I&#8217;m excited for better targeting.<\/p>\n<p>Google makes $575\/yr per US user, Meta makes $310. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/VCU0oNMq6g\">https:\/\/t.co\/VCU0oNMq6g<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Sheel Mohnot (@pitdesi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pitdesi\/status\/1919731476435800095?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 6, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a real life example of AI-driven personalization by the leading American beauty products retailer <em>Ulta Beauty<\/em>:<!----------START----------><!--BLOCKQUOTE, NO LHS LINE, GRAY--><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"skr-bq-noline\">\n<div style=\"background-color: #fafafa; padding: 15px 30px;\">&#8230; another key partnership is with software company Adobe. The goal is to work together to leverage the data of Ulta Beauty\u2019s 44.6 million loyalty program members and present them with more personalized marketing messages. While the project is still fairly new, Ulta wants to generate unique images and text so that shoppers who visit the company&#8217;s website or app will see a mix of goods based on their past history along with the products that Ulta wants to pitch. Generative AI tools can make it easier to create more of that personalized content. &#8211; <em>CIO Intelligence Newsletter @ FORTUNE magazine<\/em>.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><!----------END----------><\/p>\n<p>One word of warning: Unlike the deterministic rules used by humans for personalization, AI &#8211; especially generative AI &#8211; is a stochastic \/ non-deterministic system, ergo its output may have errors, hallucinations, inconsistencies, and so on. To that extent, marketers may not trust AI fully and will want to put a &#8220;human in the loop&#8221; to verify the elements of personalization generated by AI before approving the campaign for delivery.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, as the fidelity of AI improves, we can expect the human to be taken out of the loop.<\/p>\n<p>On a side note, <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/ai\/2025\/04\/regrets-actors-who-sold-ai-avatars-stuck-in-black-mirror-esque-dystopia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>ARS TECHNICA<\/em><\/a> has a cautionary tale for celebrities who sold rights to their images to AI companies:<br \/>\n<!--BLOCKQUOTE, NO LHS LINE, GRAY--><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"skr-bq-noline\">\n<div style=\"background-color: #fafafa; padding: 15px 30px;\">some&#8230; actors are regretting selling their likenesses to be used in AI videos that they consider embarrassing, damaging, or harmful.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13424\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13424\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/ai-personalization-fi-3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13424 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/ai-personalization-fi-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/ai-personalization-fi-3.jpg 630w, https:\/\/gtm360.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/ai-personalization-fi-3-500x281.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13424\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">IMAGE COURTESY: ARS TECHNICA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<hr style=\"width: 70%;\" \/>\n<p>Personalization itself is very old. What AI does is to make the activity <em>faster, better, and cheaper<\/em>. To that extent, AI is not enabling a new JTBD (Job To Be Done) but taking an existing JTBD to the next level of quality, throughput and speed.
